PC Gaming – Plague Inc
Plague Inc. is a real-time strategy game, developed and released by UK-based indie games studio Ndemic Creations, which you can download for free from their official site. In this game, the player creates and develops a pathogen, choosing to fight it as a bio-hazard or protect the human race from it. You do this by making use of various weapons against the pathogen and attacking its susceptible humans. This is done by exploring a closed-off island, known as the plague island, which has been shrouded in mystery since the outbreak.
In the game itself, you’ll find that the character is quite malnourished and weak, and is often attacked and cornered by a massive outbreak. It’s up to your hero, Michael, to fight his way out of the Island and find help. He must battle through waves of infected humans and be aided by an armada of Nazgul soldiers. The storyline is driven primarily by a series of flashbacks, which help to further develop the character of the game. As you proceed through the game, new weapons and abilities are unlocked along the way. Also, as you progress through the game, better strategies become available for the more difficult missions.
For those who have played previous versions of Plague Inc, it’s a fairly linear game with the same story. However, the player is also given a number of optional missions and areas to explore, each with its own objectives and goals. These missions range from helping the humans fight off the pathogen and prevent the outbreak from spreading to assisting Michael with deciphering the memories of those who were affected. All told, it’s an engaging game with multiple side quests and storyline branches.
The player begins by selecting an agent and then jumps into action within the game using that agent’s flashlight, and the first-person perspective. The perspective gives the illusion that the player is inside the center of the action and moving around the environment is done using the mouse. It’s a perspective shift in a third-person point of view, meaning the player can look around corners, over walls, or through windows and doors while using the mouse to move around. Using both eyes is more effective than just looking straight ahead.
Although some elements of the game are similar to other first-person shooters (FPS), such as weapon crafting, there are key differences that make the game’s version worth having and recommend it as an alternative entertainment option. First, it uses its flashlight to inspect infected areas, a mechanic that is unique in first-person shooters. This is not only an effective way to identify infected areas but is also a means of spreading the disease to other survivors. Also, moving about using the flashlight is done using a button attached to the mouse, which is one of the most intuitive controls in a video game.
Also different from other titles, it does not have any type of dialogue boxes for the characters to say during the game’s events. When moving through the environment, you must use your flashlight to look around, identifying infected areas and other hazards. The camera follows the player, looking both ahead and behind. If another player comes into range of the player, the camera will rotate around that player, allowing him or her to see what’s behind them.
Unlike other first-person shooters, Plague Inc. uses an “infection” system rather than the typical objective-based gameplay. Infected humans will mutate and attack any human within a certain range of them. To make matters worse, they are able to turn on their fellow humans, creating a never-ending swarm of Zombies that must be killed immediately. The problem with this system is that if you kill one of the infected, he or she can turn against you and start making a lot more Zombies attack you. Although it can be frustrating, it’s also a key element in the game that keeps the game interesting.
Overall, Plague Inc. is definitely a unique game that is well worth the price. Although it does have some early technical problems, they aren’t enough to keep you from enjoying this exciting first-person shooter title. In addition, it’s well designed and has a strong storyline, along with an excellent combination of first-person shooting and zombie action. In short, if you enjoy playing first-person shooters with an overall storyline, you’ll love playing Plague Inc.
