Do You Know What Extreme Landings Is?
Extreme Landings is a training program designed for jumping higher. I first came across the system about three years ago when I saw a commercial for it. I must say I was skeptical at first, as most systems just put you through plyometrics, which I’m not a big fan of. However, I was intrigued by the fact that the system seemed to be all about vertical leaping ability. I watched a couple of the programs and they all had one thing in common, an extreme landing strip.
What is an extreme landing strip? An extreme landing strip is a jump start area where your vertical leap starts to decrease immediately after the jump is taken. I believe this is done because your body has to stop your momentum in order to absorb the force of the jump and transfer it to the ground. If you have your momentum going into the jump and then accelerate down after, you will likely be at or near your maximum height at the end of the jump. However, if you take a very low vertical leap and then accelerate back up, you will decelerate your speed on impact and decelerate the amount of time it takes for you to reach your maximum height.
So, how does this help you jump higher? Well, the landing strip increases your vertical leap dramatically and allows you to achieve your maximum height much quicker. All you have to do is increase your maximum vertical leap to at least 33 inches to take advantage of the added boost. This means a shorter jump or you can’t achieve your maximum height.
This may seem like it’s a gimmick, but it isn’t. I’ve been using this system for years now and I still get impressive results. I don’t even think about slowing down when I land, I just go with my maximum vertical leap and I land perfectly.
What are the benefits of using the landing strip? Well, firstly you need to understand that there’s no such thing as overlearning how to jump. As you improve in your vertical leap you will improve in other areas of your game such as your dunks and your rebounding. But, improving your landing is by far the most important thing you can do as a player.
You see, extreme landings are where all the improvements start. If you learn how to jump high without touching the ground, you’re not making progress, you’re just practicing. When you do start landing with your full extension, your jump is going to be very inconsistent. If you limit yourself to landing only with your legs, you won’t have a chance to learn how to jump at all. So the key to improving is making sure you always lift your legs off the ground with full extension, never the sole.
So how can you improve this when you land? Well, one way is by improving your technique. It’s very easy to do something like jump on an unstable box or platform and focus on breaking big jumps. This isn’t effective, however, because even if you break big jumps, you still have quite a bit of work to do before you can be a good jump man.
What you need to do instead is to train for extreme. Try working on a tree, a pillar, a chair, a sofa – anything to where you can literally fall down no matter what you do. All this does is force you to develop your core strength, which is what you need to be a good strong player. Then, and only then will you start seeing results.
